Driving directions from Keahole-Kona International: From the airport exit, turn left to take State Hwy 19 (Queen Kaahumanu Hwy) north for about 24 miles. Turn left on Kaunaoa Dr. Getting there: A rental car is the best option from the airport, especially since most guests will want a car anyway for sightseeing. Taxis are also available ($26–35; fees subject to change without notice). Getting around: A rental car is essential for sightseeing on the Big Island.

What to expect: Low-key, tasteful luxury and Hawaiian graciousness characterize this resort hotel. Families and couples find plenty to do or choose to do nothing at all. Amenity highlights: Rated as one of America's best beaches and a hit with boogie boarders, the broad and deep Hapuna Beach stretches expansively in front of the hotel and is graced by tall coconut palms. At the hotel's northern edge is a small snorkeling cove with a tiny sand beach. Snorkel sets and boogie boards can be rented near the beach. The hotel's large pool, surrounded by a roomy sundeck, offers fresh-water swimming and relaxed sunning. Adjacent to the pool is a big spa for ocean-view soaking. Insider tip: From the hotel's northern boundary, a rock-and-dirt path leads away from civilization to a wild, lava-rock coast of coves, caves, and waves. In splendid isolation, guests can enjoy sunsets the way they appeared to ancient Hawaiians and engage in tranquil meditation enhanced by the low baritone booms of the Pacific foaming into caves.

The 351-room hotel is comprised of three five-story towers. At the entrance is a spectacular stand of King Royal Palms, estimated to be more than a century old. A fitness center is located at the Hapuna Golf Course clubhouse where daily activities include aerobics and yoga classes, golf clinics and driving demonstrations, and ti-leaf skirt-making. Guests of Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel can use all facilities at its nearby sister hotel, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, which is a 15-minute walk away or a brief complimentary shuttle ride.
